Certificate Exams to Feature Scaled Numeric Scores
Cambridge–Michigan Language Assessments is happy to announce an enhancement to its
University of Michigan certificate exam score reports. This change will provide stakeholders with
additional information about candidate performance.
Currently, any examinee who takes the Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English
(ECCE) or the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE) receives an official
score report that provides a band score for each section. As of May 2011, in addition to the band
score, the official score report will also feature a scaled numeric score (0–1000) for the listening
and GVR/GCVR sections.
The criteria for awarding certificates for the ECCE and ECPE remain the same, and the writing
and speaking sections for the exams will continue to be reported on the current five-point scales.
However, this additional score information will provide examinees with more precise information
on their performance. For example, an examinee who receives a band score of Pass (P) in the
listening section of either ECCE or ECPE will now be able to see if his or her score is at the top of
this band—close to a High Pass (HP)—or if it is closer to a Low Pass (LP). Examinees and teachers
can use the information to focus on areas where additional practice is needed.
Numerical score information will appear on official ECCE and ECPE score reports beginning
with the May 2011 exams.
