Gradualism states that evolution happens very slowly over great deals of time. For example, a chromosomal mutation on a reptile may occur that causes it's scales to have a very slight texture to them. This texture may or may not give this reptile an advantage. An example of this advantage could be that a snake could travel ever so slightly faster and evade a predator because of this speed advantage. Due to it's ability to evade said predator, this reptile is able to survive to the point where it reproduces, and it's genetic abnormality has a chance of being carried either dominantly or resistively by it's offspring. After many generations, this deviation, if the cumulative boon is significant enough, will allow this portion of the population to expand giving it a presence where the genetic alteration can become prevalent.
After many more successors, one of this reptiles descendants has another mutation causing this texture on the scales to form in a more linear fashion. Thousands of years later, this linear texture begins to protrude from the end of the scale. Then after some more thousands or millions of years the scales happen to split at the ends. The cycle continues and continues and continues and eventually you have a "reptile" with feathers.
As you can see, step after step if we turn a blind eye to other evidence it seems like this method could eventually produce a bird, and we would have evolution between spices. Unfortunately for this faith, other factors, making this impossible, abound.
Timeline - Devote believers both for and against Gradualism have studied and observed the Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) extensively due to it's unparalleled short generation time (thus giving it many more opportunities to mutate). And have found that even across thousands and thousands of generations, with millions if not billions of genetic lines, advantageous mutations have not been observed. This does not in itself rule out that these types of mutations occur, but it does tell us that the time in which would be required for something even as complex as a bacterium to "evolve" would be immense, and expand that to something truly complicated, like an animal, and the time would have to be longer than our sun would take to be long extinguished, and without the sun's energy, carbon based life as we know it could not exist. So, alone, Gradualism appears not to be able to explain life at all, let alone the diversity of life found on earth.
Viability - All DNA, the "program" that is life, is composed of base pairs. Every known life form has at least tens of thousands, but up to billions (humans have over 3 billion base pairs). These base pairs are organized into collections that we call chromosomes. There are many different species of organisms sharing different numbers of chromosomes, and thus at some point in Gradualism, there would have to be a time when there was a change in this number to create all our known species. A change in this number happening naturally, again, has never been observed not with all the factors against it does not seem even provable, let alone could it happen as many times as as would be needed to form all the known organisms.
In the event that a genetic deformity takes place, and the resulting number of chromosomes are different, the resulting organism has very little chance of surviving at all. In the event that the organism does survive, such as is the case with Down Syndrome, science has never seen a time where that organism was not disabled in some fashion, and thus the concept of survival of the fittest would not apply.
When one of a surviving species does have a chromosomal mismatch or doubling, generally at least the males are found to be sterile. For example, there have only been two documented cases of males with Down Syndrome being capable of reproducing. This is significant because for reproduction both haploid cells must contain the same abnormality, or fertilization would be impossible because the chromosomes would be misaligned. Without a life form that is not capable of planning for such a mating, (Modern Man) the odds of such a mating occurring and then being successful are infinitesimal.
Above all, one of the most convincing piece of evidence disproving Gradualism is that if it were the case, nearly, if not every, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and species would have countless of these adaptations, most having absolutely no function whatsoever. But that is not the case. Looking at even humans we see major pieces like the appendix, and even little details like freckles or hair color all have a valuable purpose.
Saltation is the concept that the changes of evolution are made in leaps. The explanations can vary from Catastrophism, the concept that significant events necessitate the acceleration of evolution, to genetic markers that are activated by certain events, to random mutations. Saltation can be the response to all the lack of evidence of evolution because for each mutation that occurred would most likely result in the termination of that genetic line due to deformity, or would result in the new life form without the need to discover any "missing links". But as with Gradualism, the Saltation religion does not hold it's own against scientific scrutiny.
Using our lizard example before, the very nature of things makes it seem ridiculous that a lizard could have an offspring that would have feathers. Specifically, the feather is an incredibly complex organ with many features far to intricate to "just happen". However simpler structures like hairs, fingernails or even the uvula are each too intricate and symbiotic with the surrounding systems to be single step chance.
Going back to our previously examined trials with the fruit flies, we also have not observed any evidence of Saltation.

Τυπικά δεν αλληλοαναιρούνται.Επειδή όμως στο thread λέγοντας "θεός",υπονοείται ο Γιαχβέ,τότε go to Genesis.Και όχι,δεν το δέχομαι ως αλληγορία,δεν έχω κανένα λόγο να το δω έτσι και να μην το δω σαν μια απλή interpretation of the world made by nomads.
