Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte revealed, looks the price

Nokia introduced today a new addition to its premium Arte-series. The new Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte stays faithful to the family tradition, and the exquisite finish is yet again tinged with a touch of distinctive personality.
Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte is cast in the same mold as the Arte and the Sapphire Arte. The materials used are different this time, carbon fiber with etched 3D patterns dominating the exterior. And yes, it does remind us of the LG KF750 Secret's battery cover too.
The new Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte will feature the turn-to-mute and tap-for time features that we got to know in the original Arte. Those use the built-in accelerometer to show the time by simply taping twice on the case or mute calls by turning it over. In fact, the only difference in functionality is the internal memory, which has grown to 4GB now.
Some of the other features of the Carbon Arte include a 3 megapixel auto focus camera, 2" OLED screen with scratch resistant coating. There is also 3G support, as well as Bluetooth and microUSB on-board.
Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte will become available in the 3rd quarter of the year (meaning it's got a month or so) at an estimated retail price of 1100 euro before subsidies or taxes. A wide range of exquisite accessories will ship with the handset. Well, with a price-tag like that they'd better do.

Today Nokia introduced officially two new members of the Nseries family - Nokia N79 and Nokia N85. The two devices come with rather different designs but both have quite extensive specs sheets to brag about.
Nokia N85

Nokia N85 is a quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS dual slider, inspired by the controversial design of the Nokia N81. It's also got HSDPA support to improve network data transfer speed even further. Undoubtedly, the most exiting feature about the N85 is the display - a 2.6" 16M color AMOLED unit of QVGA resolution. There is a built-in accelerometer for automatic rotation of the UI and dedicated gaming keys for improving the N-gage gaming expirience.

Some of the other features of the Nokia N85 include microUSB slot, 3.5mm standard audio jack and GPS. The handset running of the Symbian OS with S60 UI and Feature Pack 2 preinstalled will also have WLAN and Bluetooth among its connectivity options. A 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, dual-LED flash and autofocus assist light is mounted at the back of the device. It can manage the sweet VGA video recording at up to 30 fps. A secondary CIF camera is at the front to take care of the video calls.
The built-in memory of the Nokia N85 is 74MB and there is a microSD card slot to extend that. An 8GB card (the largest currently available on the market) will be included in the retail package. The final multimedia touches to the Nokia N85 are the FM radio and FM transmitter.
Nokia N85 will be available in Copper color in October for an estimated retail price of 450 euro (660 US dollars) before taxes or subsides.


Nokia N79

The bar-shaped Nokia N79 has a bit more modest feature list but has better (or so it seems to us) looks and a more compact boy. It still supports all the four GSM bands but the 3G works only on the 900 and 2100 MHz bands. The display on the N79 is a 2.4" QVGA one, capable of showing up to 16M colors. Wi-Fi, GPS and a 5 megapixel camera are some of its other more important features.
Nokia N79 also sports FM radio and FM transmitter, allowing you to broadcast your favorite tracks within a short range over radio waves. Quite as expected, it too runs on the Symbian OS with S60 v3.2 UI. Nokia N79, much like the N85, features the interesting Navi wheel navigation solution which we first came to know in the Nokia N81. The 3.5mm standard audio jack, the Bluetooth connectivity and the microUSB slot are hardly a surprise to anyone. The internal memory of the N79 is 50MB and it will be expandable through the microSD card slot (a 4GB memory card will be included in the retail package).

The other upgrade of the Nokia N79 over the N78 (in addition to the improved camera and video recording) is its easily customizable exterior. The handset will come with two extra Xpress-on covers in the retail package and additional ones can also be purchased.


Nokia N79 will hit the shelves in Canvas White and Seal Grey color versions in October and will cost 350 euro (515 US dollars) before taxes or subsides.

HTC announces weird looking S740

The Taiwanese mobile phone manufacturer HTC lifted the curtain on a new Windows Mobile device today. HTC S740 runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard device and sports rather unusual design.
Coming as a successor of the HTC S730 the S740 is a smartphone with a sliding-out four-row QWERTY keyboard. It boasts a 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225 processor and the greatly sounding 256MB RAM.
The display of the HTC S740 is a 2.4" QVGA one (no touchscreen, of course). All four GSM bands and two UMTS (900 and 2100 MHz) bands are supported by the new phone. There is also HSDPA support to make sure that the quickest network data transfers around are available.

Coming with a HTC Touch Diamond-like back, HTC S740 has a 3.2 megapixel fixed-focus snapper on board. Some of the other more important features are built-in GPS (with A-GPS support), Wi-Fi and the HTC ExtUSB slot which combines a mini-USB 2.0 and an audio jack.

The HTC S740 is going to be available across Europe from September, but there is no information regarding its pricing yet.
It's hard to see the reason for releasing a handset such as the S730 with the HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro already available but the hardline WinMo Standard fans might appreciate it. If there are any of them left, that is.

Market is announced, still waiting for the first device...
Google clearly haven't been wasting their time recently - they have prepared a new online platform for delivering third-party applications to Android-based handsets, called Android Market. And this new Android Market seems to be just around the corner.
Much like the Apple AppStore, the Android Market is a native application that runs on the handset but connects to the new online Google service. It will be used as download manager and installer for third-party applications for the Android OS.


The Android Market will offer a very simple three-step interface for collecting applications. All it takes for the developer is to register and than describe and upload the app. Unlike the AppStore, there will be no need for approval from Google before that. The Android market will also feature a rating and comment system similar to the one of YouTube.
The first Android device that's supposed to roll out is the HTC Dream. No details about the device specs are known, and there are no leaked photos either. Even its release date is not carved in stone yet, if you know what we mean.
The one thing that's known however is that this first device will be shipped with a beta version of the Market application, which will include only free applications. There is obviously some more i-dotting and t-crossing to be done before the paid applications hit the road.
Meanwhile Google also announced the winners in the first Android developer challenge. From 50 developer teams to reach the finals 10 received a hefty 275,000 US dollar checks and 10 more walked away with the modest 100,000 US dollar awards. You can check the winning apps here. Those aren't really spectacular so we guess the main purpose of the prizes is to encourage more developers to enter the next round.

Nokia promo video spills the beans on business-minded Nokia E72 and E75

A demo video of the latest and greatest business messaging devices by Nokia leaked online revealing the yet unannounced Nokia E72 and Nokia E75. The Nokia E72 is a full-QWERTY successor of the E71, while the E75 features a hybrid form factor incorporating both a normal keypad and a slide-out side QWERTY.

Both the Nokia E72 and E75 seem to have built-in GPS receivers and advanced email capabilities. We guess the other specs will be high-end as usual.

Samsung and Armani team up to offer the sleek Armani Night Effect handset


Samsung and Giorgio Armani are teaming up again to offer a fashionable handset called the Samsung Armani Night Effect. The new design is stylish, but still a bit unassuming. However the handset comes to life at night thanks to the brightly colored LEDs that go along the sides.
Standing at 12mm thickness, the new Samsung M7500 Emporio Armani Night Effect is packed with goodies - enough to make it attractive even to tech-oriented consumers. It sports quad-band GSM and HSDPA support and its design incorporates not only slim waistline and brushed metal front but also a 2.2-inch OLED display. A 3.2 megapixel camera (no flash but with autofocus), stereo Bluetooth, FM radio and microSD card slot complete the tally.
The Armani branding is all over the new handset - from the front panel, through the tacky LED-lit left side all the way to the back panel. An interesting fact is that the Samsung-Armani cooperation this time seems to be on another level.
Unlike the original Samsung P520 Armani, now the Armani M7500 Night Effect handset doesn't have the Giorgio Armani branding. Instead it bears the Emporio Armani logo. Emporio Armani is the most popular and wide spread of all Armani sub-brands and it's targeted at a more youthful audience (plus it's not as expensive as the high-end Giorgio Armani lineup).
The youthful targeting of the new Samsung Armani Night Effect is without a doubt underlined by the side-mounted LED backlit dedicated music keys.
The Samsung Armani Night Effect will start shipping in Europe some time in November, South-East Asia and the Middle East will follow soon after that.
